Yesterday, I got through work, but I also managed to watch a fair amount of stuff:
soaps: Fri's ep's.
DOOL - Xander rants and rails against Philip after finding out about Philip's fraud. Of course, cowardly Sarah fails to fess up her role. Gabi whines to Melinda Trask that JJ thinks that Gabi is a suspect (she totally is!!), and hires Melinda; later Shawn and JJ threaten to arrest Melinda when Melinda's gun shows up, but she throws Ava (who's off the show anyway) under the bus for it. Rafe tells Sami about telling Jada the truth about their affair; later Sami, and Vivian, leave town for international destinations.
GH - Mostly boring stuff involving Jordan and Natalia with Jenz Sidwell; also, Jason and Sidwell throw Natalia under the bus to Maxie & Brook Lynn, and Lucy, respectively. Joss The Spy follows the professor dude to a lab at GH. Dumb Emma has a bad time with her community service at GH with children.
golf: Well, I got this one wrong! At the start of the final day at The Heritage in Hilton Head, it did look like Justin Thomas was pretty much out of it. But Si Woo Kim basically fell apart and dropped way down the leaderboard. Meanwhile, Thomas got his s**t together, and got back in the lead throughout most of the day. Lurking, though, was younger guy Andrew Novak, looking for his first PGA win - Novak birdied the final hole to force a playoff (for the second week in a row!). But just last last week's Master's playoff, this one also only went to one playoff hole, with the leader, this time Justin Thomas, birding it for the win! New family man Justin Thomas wins his first tourney in 3 years!
Then I watched two movies:
Companion (Max) - Interesting - I thought this 2025 flick was an A24 pic, but it isn't.
Still, this one kind of gave me some of the same vibes that A24's "Bodies Bodies Bodies" did (though this is a somewhat more serious flick).
In this one, Sophie Thatcher (one of those actresses that has an unfortunately fixation on messing with her own face - this was filmed in late 2023, when Thatcher had only starting f**king with her face, so here only her lips look weird) plays a android/robot who finds out the hard way what she is.
Her "boyfriend" is none other than "Hughie" from "The Boys"! (Jack Quaid). He plays a nebishy type here too.
Anyway, Thatcher's Iris is brought along by "Hughie" to be his girlfriend on a weekend(?) visit to the upstate New York country "estate" of a sketchy Russian dude (Rupert Friend) along with some other friends (e.g. Harvey Guillen). But things spin wildly out of control there, and Iris ends up fighting for both her existence and her independence.
This was a decent thriller flick, though probably too facile in parts. But overall I enjoyed it.
Y2K (Max) - This 2024 "horror comedy" (emphasis on the "comedy" over the "horror") flick is actually legitimately an A24 flick.
Anim would love this one, based on the casting, as both Rachel Zegler and Alicia Silverstone are in this (as is Fred Durst, playing himself!!).
This one is about two high school nerds, and what happens to them on New Year's Eve 1999 when the clock strikes midnight and Y2K hits.
I was surprised that one of the nerds was played by Julian Dennison from "Deadpool 2". The other was played by Jaeden Martell, and his nerd character is in love with a popular girl (Zegler) who also, conveniently, happens to be some kind of master coder.
Anyway, it takes too long to get there, but when midnight hits, Y2K is unleashed, and the electronic machines come... ALIVE!
A wacky vision of the "robot apocalypse" ensues as the machines assemble themselves together to eradicate and enslave mankind!
Can this wacky assortment of high schoolers save the world?!
I didn't like this nearly as much as "Companion". It was OK - and Durst is somewhat amusing playing a douche-y version(?) of himself.
But this wasn't as funny as it thought it was, I think, and they didn't balance the humorous tone with the actual apocalypse well IMO.
What did you watch?
