[OT] Crimo gets 7 consecutive life sentences

Robert Crimo Jr., who murdered 7 people and injured several more in a mass shooting north of Chicago in 2022, has been sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.

I'm confused. The article simultaneously claimed that he was charged with THREE first degree murder charges for each person who died AND that EACH first degree murder charge is eligible for a life sentence. How can he possible be charged with THREE first degree murders on each victim? And even if that makes sense in some way that escapes me, how does he manage to get only 7 consecutive life sentences instead of 21?
Also, has anything come out about WHY he did what he did? That's often the most intriguing part of a crime in that it offers insight into the thinking of the criminal. Sometimes, the criminal's thought process is so bizarre that you wonder why they hadn't been in a psychiatric institution (if any still exist). Other times, the criminal doesn't seem to have thought at all or had no apparent moral code to restrain him. And sometimes, their thought process reveals a horrific evil.
