 Apparently the ballot in Poilevre's district was more than 3 feet long
and it's believed many voters were confused even though party
affiliation is shown on Canadian ballots. (It wasn't always and I
remember the election when I was in my early teens and there were two
candidates in our district with the same surname and that that evening
when the results were on TV my mother was quite distressed to find she
had mis-remembered and inadvertently voted Communist....)
 

Ay Caramba! I'd be mortified if I'd voted for a Communist when I meant to vote for someone else.
If I recall correctly, party affiliations ALWAYS appeared on ballots but then some bright spark convinced the powers that be to eliminate that and so the next election, affiliations were dropped. But they were back again the next election (if I recall correctly) so I think there must have been more stories like your mother's that prompted them to reinstate affiliations.

I don't know how you could legally prevent this though Canada does
have a requirement that candidates file a deposit when filing their
nomination papers. This deposit is refunded if the candidate gets more
than a certain percentage (25%? 50%?) of the votes cast for the
winning candidate. I heard about this years ago when my late
grandfather was a federal candidate for one of the major parties but
that was in the 1960s. I know the deposit requirement is still in the
elections act but have no idea the amount currently. It's high enough
to discourage most of the nutbars but not serious candidates.

Actually, I read a YouTube comment yesterday that said it is no longer necessary to put down a deposit to get on the ballot; this was apparently a reform of the Trudeau government some time in the past decade. But it was only a YouTube comment with a citation so it may not be true. This nonsense with the 3 foot long ballots is probably pretty good justification for reinstating the deposit to get on the ballot but given that it hurt their enemy Poilievre, it wouldn't surprise me if the Liberals did NOT restore the deposits.
