I know "no one gets Netflix" but I'm writing this anyway in case that generalization overlooks anyone or this post inspires anyone to check it out.
Dept. Q is a cop show set in Scotland. The main character is a skilled but difficult detective named DCI (Detective Chief Inspector) Carl Morck (who is presumably from Orck) who everyone calls by his first name. Carl has just come back from being shot in the line of duty. He, his partner, and a patrolman were at a crime scene - a fatal stabbing - when a disguised man just stepped out of the kitchen and shot all three of them, leaving one dead, one paralyzed and one ready to go back to work.
I've only watched the first of the 9 episodes so I don't have a good feeling for the overall story yet. The first episode seems to mostly be setting things up for the remaining episodes. We learn how most of his associates find Morck an obnoxious dick and that his boss has decided to move him off to a whole new department, Department Q, in the basement of the police station, where he will choose from among cold cases that interest them and try to solve them. He's assisted by a man who is an IT specialist with a murky background adjacent to police work in his native Syria.
The other key element of the story seems to be a female lawyer who lost a big case and disappeared shortly after that. Someone had been sending her harassing/threatening texts before her disappearance. It looks as if Morck is going to be getting into her case in the remaining episodes....
In terms of cast, I haven't seen anyone I recognize yet aside from Kelly McDonald who played Nucky Thompson's girlfriend in Boardwalk Empire a few years back. This time, she plays the psychiatrist Morck is seeing as a result of being shot but, unlike American shows, she doesn't seem to have to sign off on his mental health before letting him back on duty.
IMDB rates this a 7.9 but I can't say after only 1 episode.
