I saw it the first time. While the book justified the title, the TV show
screwed up the plot so badly that it wasn’t even the last ship.
Like "Falling Skies" (and "Earth: Final Conflict"), "The Last Ship" was also a show that got "much less good" fast. The first season was pretty terrific. The second season was just OK, IIRC. But once they dumped Rhona Mitra, it went downhill super-fast, and as I recall the last couple of seasons didn't even make much sense (despite having some good eye candy along the way).The pilot was directed by Jonathan Mostow, whose BREAKDOWN (1997) was a tight, underappreciated little thriller. That signaled some aspiration in the eye-candy department. (Much of the last two seasons was directed Peter "Robocop" Weller.)
