That's bad. Factory repair might be able to do something... there may be a
way to do the firmware update either by swapping the EEPROM chip out or by
setting some magic jumper inside that causes it to reload the EEPROM from
an outside source. But it's not going to be something that your neighborhood
tech can do.
Always be very careful about firmware updates on anything... don't ever do
it unless you have to, and if you have to always do it on AC power.
I don't suppose there is a 'reset' connection anywhere? Two pads that
can be bridged to force it to return to a starting point?
