That was what my observation is, which is that Brand X will have a cross
reference specific only for Brand X spark plugs.
That is, there is no "real" cross reference that I know of for spark plugs.

What I find strange is that this one thing everyone wants, doesn't exist.
I use that site for all sorts of car parts. I check at
manufacturer/distributor websites to confirm a part is a real
match before buying though.
