That was in fact true before software, rechargeable electric systems,
proprietary chips and wireless transmitters/receivers.
Heck, I think the line was crossed with STI. How many here have actually
fixed an STI lever, beyond shooting it with lubricant?

spring in the lever failed and I simply hooked it up and the return
spring in the front derailleur acted just like a return spring without
