Benefits and detriments can very often be measured.
...and many people measure them and the vast majority choose not to
buy a bicycle and buy a gun instead.
You didn't "measure" the benefits and detriments of buying a gun.
Of course I did, way back when I was a teenager. The detriment was the
cost, the benefit was a semi-automatic pistol. I learned how to
handle and shoot a pistol with it, so that was a benefit. Shooting a
handgun is very different from shooting a rifle. It takes some
different skills.
You
caved into your fears and told yourself "I have to have a gun to defend
myself. I have to have it even when I'm pedaling on an empty bicycle
path out in the sticks, or a bike path where other users are mothers
pushing baby strollers. I may have to use it to save my life!"
I decided to have a gun on my bike rides partly because some local Law
enforcement officers told me it would be a good idea for me to have
one. I also thought it was a good idea, as did a couple of friends, my
son and daughter, my grandkids, and my wife. My wife would not like it
if I didn't carry it.
I didn't buy the gun to carry on the bike. My wife saw it and wanted
it for herself. I bought it for her and then she decided she'd rather
have a different gun. She didn't like the Bersa because it has an
exposed hammer which catches on things. I much prefer a hammer fired
handgun, because the harder trigger pull when shooting double action
works as a safety without having to do anything other than pulling the
trigger.
So how many times have you used it?
I use it on every ride, the same way I use the extra derailleur hanger
I carry. I also carry one of those little devices that lets you use a
regular auto tire pump in a presta valve, but I've never once used it.
I think it's still in my bag. I should remember to check tomorrow,
It feels good to be prepared.
Based on your comments here, it's
been zero. So you spent the money, you lug your toy around, and you've
gotten zero benefit.
Nonsense.. The benefits are significant, and I really enjoyed
designing and building the device I carry it in. It fits in a bottle
cage. I've had offers to build them.
Well, maybe you got a tiny testosterone boost. And maybe you felt a
little less afraid. You could have gotten those benefits more cheaply by
buying a copy of Playboy and a teddy bear.
well, if that works for you, run with it.
