I see, is that why the "peaceful petitioners" decided to smash the
windows out of the doors? I'm struggling to see why the "vandalism"
was necessary if the capital police politely held the doors open for
those "peaceful petitioners",

Sorry andrew, but the narrative that it was a peaceful protest is
complete unmitigated bullshit (read: a fucking lie).
>
What's more disappointing is that you're intelligent enough to
understand what really happened, unlike a certain other deluded
kool-aide drinker in this forum.
>
It was an attempted insurrection. There was no "peaceful redress"
intended. The rioters stormed the capital with the intent of
preventing the peaceful transition of power through violence and
intimidation. Those who were jailed for it didn't get nearly what the
deserved. It was treason, nothing less.

No one's defending felony assault, but most of the 6 January
prisoners did no such thing.
>
Actually, you're doing just that, trying to claim it was a peaceful
protest to address a grievance. It was nothing of the kind, and your
kowtowing to the magatard mob is very specifically condoning felonious
assault.

Perhaps I was not clear.

Does that help?

No. Even if they were not assaulting security guards or smashing
windows, anyone partipating in that crowd and entering where they were
clearly forbidden to enter was taking part in a riot. And their
objective was clear: To prevent the peaceful transfer of power that was
intended by the constitution, and properly done every prior time without
exception.
It didn't help that they were they preferred the "wrong" party.

Much 'reportage' relied on Ms Pelosi's unorthodox* 'January 6 Committee' press releases. That committee suppressed most Capitol security camera video, some of which was released much later.
Another example: Mr Nutcase got 4-1/2 years (!!)  but committed no assault nor vandalism (being nuts is not in itself a crime yet). Some video here:
https://nypost.com/2023/03/06/jan-6-footage-shows-cops-bringing-qanon-shaman-to-senate-floor/
Were crimes committed? Yes.  But most convicted had committed no crime. The preceding rally drew roughly 80,000 people and some very large number walked over to the Capitol in hopes that Mr Pence would do exactly the same as then-VP Mr Nixon did in January 1961 regarding dual elector slates.
*formed outside of longstanding House rules. She didn't even bring a rules change first, which she had the votes to ram through.
