Well :-} I've never seen the idea toted that automobiles are
"designed to kill people" although they seem to do a pretty good job
of doing so.

Automobiles are not designed to kill people. Auto deaths are unfortunate, but it's reasonable to say that the practical benefits of automobiles outweigh their detriments. You, John, apparently own an automobile of some type. That means you apparently think its benefits outweigh its detriments.
The guns I argue against are absolutely designed to kill people. I'm saying their detriments to society greatly outweigh their non-existent practical benefits. I note that nobody here has yet posted a practical benefit for such guns in civilian hands. And I note that you, John, apparently do not own an AR-style rifle. That means you judge the detriments of owning an AR-style rifle outweigh any practical benefits. And you're doing just fine without one.
