On the other hand, the net effect of 'gun free zones' is to attract maniacs, where they are assured of no defense by victims. As in the NIU Valentines' Day affair, when a wacko shot up a classroom. A recently discharged soldier in that class died laying across his girlfriend ( who lived). His 9mm was, as the rules required, locked in his glovebox in the parking lot.
It's a really wild "Quick Draw McGraw" fantasy to pretend that if that guy had his handgun on him, he would have somehow stopped the shooter. The guy burst into an auditorium and began shooting, getting off ~50 rounds within a minute or two.
And I'll note that there are _plenty_ of mass shootings that happen outside of gun free zones. Yet there are very, very few reports of "good guys with guns" stopping the mayhem before multiple people are injured or killed.
Based on what I read, the most common examples of someone shooting back seem to happen in gang shootings connected to gang wars. Those attempts certainly don't dissuade the original attackers.
