It's a rare handgun that can fire as many rounds within a minute as can a standard AR with a couple standard magazines.
And please note, I'm talking literal "rounds within a minute." I'm not talking about instantaneous firing rate - a distinction that has totally tripped you up many times in the past!
That's specifically why the nutcases intent on killing the maximum number of kids or other people in a crowd usually choose the AR style.

I'm guessing but I suspect that the use of the AR for school shooting
may be due to them being so cheap to buy and school kids don't have
much money.

Most of the high death count school shootings have not been by students of the school. They've been done by somewhat older guys.
