I'm well aware of that, and I've sometimes wished I could "reserve" a book in a different way than usual. Instead of "Can I borrow it when someone finally returns it?" there are books I've wished I could have said "When you're getting ready to throw it out, can I buy it?" I missed a couple good ones that way.
These days, it's less of an issue for me. I've found
