I found another 27" tire to try while waiting for this 700c fad to fade
away.
I noticed that my Continental Ultra-Sport (or whatever the cheapest one is
called) had started to develop a 'thump thump thump'. It was really bald
and I had been waiting for that first hint of threads to show up...well, too
bad, a thump means time to change.
I have put on a Michelin ProTek tire. It is pretty heavy, says that it's
"ebike ready" so I'm guessing that's why.
The inflation range is 60-90 psi (rounding off the 'bar' numbers).
I've probably put about 40 to 50 miles on it so far and it seems fine.
It was made in Thailand, if I remember right...must be a French
protectorate, eh?
It's 27 x 1-1/4 and I forget where it came from...somewhere mail order.
So, recommended so far and I have no complaints.

Right, that series of Michelin are Thai, as are Vittorias and several other major brands. Overall, a good place to make tires.
