My situation is similar, except that the politically independent "village" is contiguous with surrounding suburban townships. But I greatly value the ease with which I can bike to the pharmacy, library, dentist, grocery, etc.
Also, since the village is old-style, it features sidewalks aside nearly all residential streets. That's no longer the norm for more "modern" neighborhoods. (In the village, my street is unusual for not having one.) So the village is a very pleasant place for walking. My wife and I have probably walked over 10000 miles within the village.
