p.s.Statista wants me to sign up for a subscription. No thanks. This is
https://www.statista.com/statistics/1263780/ebit-margins-of-container-carriers-by-quarter/
roughly the same graph with some interesting annotations:
"Average Operating Margins of Main Carriers by Quarter, 2008-2023"
<https://porteconomicsmanagement.org/pemp/contents/part1/ports-and-container-shipping/average-operating-margins-carriers-quarter/>
The last paragraph is the most interesting:
"By late 2023, the average operating margins entered negative
territory (-3% in Q4 2023) for the first time since 2018."
I've been watching the "What is Going on With Shipping?" YouTube
channel, mostly to monitor the Key Bridge salvage operation:
<https://www.youtube.com/@wgowshipping/videos>
The author posts videos of incidents and events in commercial shipping
and seems well versed in how the shipping industry operates. There's
quite a bit happening that we rarely hear about in the news. I
listened to his explanation of the declining shipping profitability,
but don't recall his explanation.
