automobile pilots were neither homicidal maniacs nor stoned out of
their minds. This isn't as true now. He also wrote before walk-around
telephones; now every other driver is consumed with denigrating some
kid in a chatroom with his thumbs while wandering across lane lines...
.. and many modern cars, like mine, already ensure they stay in lane

By 2040, these kind of safety features will be present in more than
90% of the cars, so it will be meaningful for a cyclist to make sure
the car LIDAR has seen him rather than the car driver...
Does that feature mean a driver cannot move over (slightly out of lane)
to give courteous space when passing a cyclist? I don't know.
"Lane warning" gives a warning sound and tactile feedback when the
driver crosses a lane marker without activating the indicator.

With "Lane Assist" the car automatically gently steers such that the car
stays in lane (this feels a bit like a 1/2" curb). It can be overridden
by actively steering out of the lane or by activating the indicator.
Out of curiosity what constitutes as a "lane". Here the vast ,majority
of "lanes" are indicated by a simple paint line on the highway.
Simple paint on the highway allows the car's camera to recognize where
it is expected to drive. My car is able to identify lane markings (most
of the time it is capable of interpreting a mix of permanent while lines
with yellow temporary markings) but often is unable to identify curbs.
And this is a device which you pay extra for? Amazing, but how is
this an advantage over eyes?
In safety architecture, there's the rule "four eyes see more than two
eyes". The car's eyes don't fall asleep behind the wheel so prevent
crashes when the driver does.
Additional safety features like "lane assist" are typically thrown into
the bundle rather than costing extra because they improve the car's
safety rating.

Additional comfort features like "adaptive cruise control" typically
cost extra (and I would never buy a new car without adaptive cruise
control).
But for drunken driving it must be really helpful. In this situation, "Blind-spot mponitors" and "rear traffic assistants" seem the helpful for me; I tend to become overly cautios rather than reckless.
