Don't discount the other side of the equation! Yes,
ownership use is more costly but US net disposable incomes
are higher and the same is true of UK earnings versus EU.
That matters a great deal.

Take another look at the numbers:
"Disposable household and per capita income"

There are various ways of calculating disposable income. The first
and most simple method (per capita) seems to be the most common:
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disposable_household_and_per_capita_income#Disposable_income_per_capita_(OECD)>
Sorted by PPP (purchasing power parity), the US appears as number one.
UK is the 15th country from the top of the list. The EU average is
the same or slightly more than UK.
Hardly a fair comparison.
I don't care about how "fair" a statistical comparison might be. I do
care about its relevance and accuracy.
Imagine 2 countries, both with a
population of 1000.
In the first, one guy makes 1.000 million a month, everyone
else 1.000 a month.
In the second all of them make 1 million a month.
By simple math, the first country's average "disposable income
per capita" would be superior, even though 99.9% of the citizens live
in poverty.
Congratulations. You have explained why statisticians use the median
instead of the mean (average) when the data set includes outliers or
numbers that are radically different from the majority of other
numbers in the data set.
If you're interested, this video covers the basics of mean (average)
and median:
"Statistics intro: Mean, median, & mode" (8:54)
<
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-sixth-grade-math/cc-6th-data-statistics/mean-and-median/v/statistics-intro-mean-median-and-mode>
"The mean (average) of a data set is found by adding all numbers in
the data set and then dividing by the number of values in the set. The
median is the middle value when a data set is ordered from least to
greatest. The mode is the number that occurs most often in a data
set."
If you go back to the Wikipedia page I mentioned, you will find an
example of how the median fixes the problem that you mentioned:
<
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disposable_household_and_per_capita_income#Median_equivalised_disposable_income>
Using the median again results with the US having the highest
disposable income with the UK as #21 in the list at 60% of the US
income. There were no numbers provided for the EU.
Statistics lie.
Everyone lies, but that's ok because nobody listens.
