occasionally "woke up on the shoulder" when driving 100
miles from home to the base on Sunday nights.

 
The young man who used to live down the street from us
supposedly died by falling asleep while driving home from
medical school in the middle of the night. I don't know how
they were sure falling asleep was the cause of the crash,
but that's what everyone was told.

I fell asleep only once on a village street some time after
midnight.It scared me so much, although I didn't hit anything, that I
never put myself in that situation again.
