It's complex.
Illinois has relatively high firearms ownership rate outside the metro areas with a remarkably low firearm crime rate. But toss in the 'problem areas' of Chicago, Rockford, East St Louis etc and the averages* are pathetic.

Yes, it's complex, and firearm death rates vary not only by city, but by neighborhood.
But the reason you're imagining "personal armament" being reasonable is only because lots of others are wielding guns in the area.
Our city here is apparently seeing some sort of mini gang war. Multiple murders within a couple weeks, reports of bystander houses and cars being blasted at random, cops finding dozens of shells in the roads.
The other day, in the metropark a lot of our rides pass through, one of my riding buddies spotted some casings (Remington .223, I think) on the ground. We stopped, and I counted about 20 within about ten feet of roadway. Given the somewhat isolated location withing the park, I'm guessing it was some punk just trying out his new toy by blasting into the bushes. Or practicing for his next attack.
But it's fantasy to think you're going to defend yourself against something like that by quick-drawing your six-shooter. Or nine-shooter.
