If a thug wants to harm a human and can't find a gun, he can use
knives, poisons, explosives, and many other tools and/or devices. Most
of those tools and devices have little or no value for defensive
purposes.

What a specious argument.
No, it simply means that if guns were to suddenly disapear, thugs
would find another way to threaten, assault, and kill people. There
are many.
Use of poisons and explosives are both illegal
and hence rare.
Nonsense, legal poisons and explosives are pretty common. I heard a
lot of explosives being used a few days ago. I've read about rioters
(thugs) using fireworks against police.
Knives are used to harm others, but even they are
subject to restrictions in most places.
As are guns, in fact guns are restricted in many more places than are
knives.
I carry a folding knife with a 3.875 inch blade almost everywhere I
go, except on bike rides nowdays, when I carry a smaller one. Back
when I was going to school, from first grade to my last college class,
it would have been very rare for me to be without a pocket knife.
(I had to check my tiny
pocketknife before getting into the last concert I attended.) And
America has never seen a roomful of school kids killed by knife.

Or, as in the Boston use bombs... As an aside, home made bombs are
cheaper then firearms :-)

<sigh> John, "explosives" includes "bombs," already mentioned. Are you OK?
