Tom is insanely jealous of Jeff. That's the core issue.
Yes and I'm enjoying it very much.
Tom is trying to live his dreams, but instead is living his
nightmares. He wants to be believed and honored by his "followers" in
RBT. Instead, he alienates them all by lying constantly. It would
make a strange Broadway play, where the anti-hero wants recognition
for his mythical accomplishments through lying and then wonders why it
doesn't work. He believes it couldn't possibly be his lies, so he
just lies some more and continues to wonder why nobody believes him.
The sad ending has already been written by Tom. He rides off into the
sunset on his mechanically marginal bicycle assembled from eBay
salvaged parts, rides into the swamp at the base of Cull Canyon and
slowly disappears beneath the mud while blaming the Democrats.
