Has anyone tried a giant rubber band down the seat tube?  Wind up the

I like it! Best part is that you could have a rewind function that
resets the rubber band on a downhill.

Oh-oh.  If someone likes my idea or agrees with me, it's a sure sign
that I made a mistake somewhere.  Caveat lector (let the reader
beware).

Perhaps an energy storage system based on converting the vertical
motion of a vehicle into forward motion?  The original plan was to
convert the shock absorbers of an automobile into air pumps.  Every
time the car would go over a bump, the shock absorber would act like a
bicycle pump and compress some air in a reservoir.  The compressed air
would then drive an air motor.  That had a small chance of being
useful.

I believe it could also be applied to augmenting human power on a
bicycle.  Air powered cars and bicycles are nothing new:

Scavenging energy from the wasted up and down motion of a bicycle
might be worth trying.  Just convert the shock absorbers found on some
mountain bikes into air compressor pumps, add some air storage, one
way valve, an air motor and some valves to control it.  Hiding it from
the UCI inspectors might be a problem.

Soon, everyone will be riding motion scavenging compressed air
bicycles.
