Based on what I read, the most common examples of someone shooting back seem to happen in gang shootings connected to gang wars. Those attempts certainly don't dissuade the original attackers.

You found two examples, reaching back five years.
Yesterday I posted a list of 25 mass shootings that happened so far just in August of this year. Given the number of U.S. mass shootings since 2019, your "good guys with guns" have a dismal success rate.
Kind of like the folks playing the lottery.
