There are a lot of seeming meaning less variations in learning, well
meaningless until someone "discovers" them.

After WW II when the G.I.'education bill provided ex military with the
chance to get an advanced education it was "discovered" that these ex
G.I.s  were getting far higher grades then the civilians who had never
been in the military. A little investigation showed that mature
students who actually saw the benefits of an education did much better
in their collage courses then those that entered collage directly from
high school.

To the extent that Dartmouth Collage, in the 1950's was recommending
that potential students not enter collage directly from High School
but to spend a few years working for a living before they enrolled in
collage.
