I've gotten into discussions about guns with one of my best friends, who is a hunter and with whom I've done some target shooting on the rural property he recently sold. He shares my disdain for ARs, and he also believes they are not well optimized for hunting. He, as well as other sources, have said that if you need a burst of gunfire to take your game, it's a sign of incompetence.
 BTW, he had a mounted coyote in his rec room, taken by another friend at something over 100 yards, using black powder instead of an AR.
 Can we get back to your family's proudly described use of guns? Did they really ever need lots of quick shots to put meat on the table? Really?
 

As with bicycles, autos, motorcycles people choose various tools for various reasons.  'Adequate' is a big range and 'optimal' is necessarily subjective.
