Your memory is faulty. Mr. Muzi has complained about gun laws many times, with a typical quote being "How's that working out?" mostly about Chicago.
Bemusement is not necessarily criticism.
Politically, nothing is going to change any time soon. As a society, we'll roll the same rock up the same hill every morning in hopes it won't roll back down this time.
Tangentially related-
Chicago subscribes to Shot Spotter, a system which uses multiple microphones and software to instantly pinpoint gunfire for police response, as 911 calls of 'shots fired' are few (the popular phrase being, 'nobody seen nuffin').
The major effect has been to increase survival rates for people shot and secondarily an increase in arrests for all the various firearm violations (although charges are almost always and uniformly dropped by Ms Foxx).
Now come demands to discontinue the service as it's resulted in more arrests of some groups than of others. Gunshot survivors are also predominantly black, but that isn't politically actionable so it gets ignored.
Mr Johnson is hellbent on ending it, but there's surprising pushback, which may be a hopeful indicator. We'll see as the issue remains unresolved after a year of conflict.
