Yes, I remember seeing reproduced ads for such things in bicycle history books and reprinted ancient Sears catalogs. You've proved that long, long ago there were many cyclists who carried guns to stop dogs. Your other link mentioned that they were usually very small bore (5mm?) and their effect was mostly due to the noise.

Note the first wave of these (1880s~1920s) was very popular with many vendors and millions sold. A 1997 modern copy failed to sell well. The author notes leash laws were  a contributing factor to diminish canine threats.

I agree. I began avid adult cycling in a southern U.S. state where multiple dogs per household were common, leash laws (apparently) didn't exist, and we were chased by dogs almost every ride. I got to be expert at handling them, and was once quoted in _Bicycling!_ magazine on the issue.

My point was merely that when riders commonly felt a need to carry pistols, they did in fact mange to carry them. With neither nylon nor Velcro I might add!

Right. If our timid tricycle rider were transported back to the late 1800s, I probably wouldn't be saying how fearful he is. But this is today, where I note he's never mentioned ever having to use the handgun he carries for feelings of security.
