Note the first wave of these (1880s~1920s) was very popular with many
vendors and millions sold. A 1997 modern copy failed to sell well. The
author notes leash laws were  a contributing factor to diminish canine
threats.

My point was merely that when riders commonly felt a need to carry
pistols, they did in fact mange to carry them. With neither nylon nor
Velcro I might add!

Right. If our timid tricycle rider were transported back to the late
1800s, I probably wouldn't be saying how fearful he is. But this is
today, where I note he's never mentioned ever having to use the handgun
he carries for feelings of security.
