I thought the pad retraction depended on the proper flexing of a rubber
ring or seal; and I thought I came across a video detailing the need for
cleaning that stuff inside the caliper to maintain proper retraction. Am
I remembering wrong? ISTM that without some such mechanism, removing
hydraulic pressure would still leave the pads lightly scuffing the disc.

Your use must be unusual. My rim brake shoes seem to last decades.
