One of the features I like about the Gravel bike is its able to be good
enough for a wide range of conditions it will loose out to a road race bike
and a MTB on the edges but that still leaves quite a range of conditions.
That's what I've always liked about touring frames. Mine's worked well
on widely different surfaces with tires from about 23 to about 37mm. Not
on extreme mountain biking surfaces, but on things like the C&O Canal
Towpath, a true mule trail.

Arguably Gravel bikes have replaced dedicated touring bikes, which are
fairly uncommon to see in bike shops or even being used.

But yes similar wide range of performance, to a extent some road bikes with
wide tyres up to 40mm will cope with tame stuff such as towpaths and so on,
the lack of low gearing perhaps more hindering.
