   Shouldn't you be telling us how you ride out onto freeways and take the lane?

I've done it out west - Montana, I think, plus other states - when the shoulder had debris to avoid. It was legal, and wasn't particularly scary, because traffic was usually low. Traffic was much higher on the Columbia River Gorge freeway, but again, we did what we had to do to stay safe.
BTW, on freeways, our daughter took to giving truckers a "honk your horn" signal, which is sort of a fist pump. Almost all of them complied. I suspect that caused some CB chatter, because I'll bet most truckers would be interested in two cute ladies riding touring bikes, even if they were with an old man (me). In any case, they all treated us very well.
