So while 26inch bikes are hard to find sold, though are used by trikes and
so on, is still some some choice out there,
I don't see any shortage of 26 inch tires online:
<https://bicyclewarehouse.com/collections/26-inch-bike-tires>
Their catalog shows 210 tires in 26 inch including 130 tires under
$50:

Is 26 inch hard to find only in retail?
I said 26 inch bikes rather than tyres or at least new models.
You started your reply with:
"Very pretty which is really the point, can still get just about
premium 26inch tyres, and with some choice, as long as its a tyre
that has been around a while..."
I assumed you meant that you were having difficulties finding 26 inch
tires and not 26 inch bicycles.
26 bikes are really uncommon bar for the supermarket/Amazon stuff, tyres
the premium end has dropped out of the market, ie can get tyres for city
riding or park stuff or riding fire roads and the like.
For folks using the MTB in its element noting that 26inch MTB where sold
until 10 ish years ago? The choice is much more limited if any choice at
all.
If you have a 90’s MTB it’s fine can get some smoke and dart jobs done, got
an older Trance or similar your likely to have to make compromises which is
definitely sub par.
