So while 26inch bikes are hard to find sold, though are
used by trikes and
so on, is still some some choice out there,
I don't see any shortage of 26 inch tires online:

Their catalog shows 210 tires in 26 inch including 130
tires under
$50:

Is 26 inch hard to find only in retail?
_good_ 26" tires are getting harder to find.
I hadn't noticed.

All three kenda links return "internal server error" for
online purchases, dealer links just point to bike shops -
some of which are closed (in this area)
There are fewer models, and the top ($$$) Michelins are
gone, despite a good 20 year run (along with IRC
altogether), but 'shortage' may be overstated.
That depends on your intended use, MTB generally favours more expensive
tyres, to remain competitive or at least that the bike is still relevant
will need access to decent kit, my Trance is now 11 years old though it’s
had replaced parts along the way such as suspension shock last year.
And yes tyres being able to tune the tyres for how you like the bike to
handle is very much an important part of MTB set up.
With 26inch my tyre choices are Limited, and new tyres with few exceptions
don’t come in 26inch.
That I can buy some tyres is not enough I want to have the choice like I do
with 27.5/29 of different brands/compounds/intended use and so on.
In the same way that folks who want to com pet in hill climbs etc, struggle
to find top end wheel sets for rim brakes, can they get a wheel set still
absolutely but not the upper end and certainly not the choice nor the newer
models coming out.
Hence even the UK hill climbs championship is seeing disks. It is a rather
niche sport to put it mildly!
