And for Tom: What have I done? I got degrees in Mechanical Engineering,
including on invitation of the school, who recruited me by offering free
tuition plus a paid research assistantship. I did computer simulation of
steel strip processing dynamics under transient conditions, plus
detailed mathematical analysis of certain detail parts of such a system.
I worked as a hydraulics lab technician in college, then as a plant
engineer once I finished school. I also worked at a different company
doing extensive robot programming, plus other smaller projects. I did
engineering work at a holography company, plus other consulting work
while teaching. I earned my Professional Engineer's license in two
states. I ran my academic program for decades, educating hundreds of
students and providing them with careers. I shepherded the program
through multiple very successful accreditations, I hired full time and
part time faculty, I periodically revised and improved the curriculum,
instituted new courses and many new educational experiences for
students, and had many students return to thank me for their education.
I've been an active member of our local bicycle club for decades,
serving as president and in many other officer and volunteer positions.
I ran our club's annual century ride for many years, taking it from a
rider count of about 150 to over 600, when we won one of three "Best
Century" national awards from the League of American Wheelmen. I did a
little bit of bicycle racing, a lot of bicycle commuting and touring,
including coast to coast, and have been interviewed several times for
newspapers, radio and TV programs on various bicycling matters. I've
ridden in 47 U.S. states and about ten foreign countries. I've had
several bicycling-related articles published in popular and technical
magazines. I've also served on local and statewide committees related to
bicycling, recruited because of my known expertise. I helped earn
several federal grants for local bike and pedestrian projects, and was
recruited to evaluate statewide applications for other federal grants.
I've also served on various local and regional boards and committees
related to other non-bicycling issues.
