The exact same thing happened to me, except my wife said "Because you'll be commuting into the center of the city." I bought a helmet to make her happy.
It was later that I encountered analysis and discussions of helmet data by statistician Dr. Dorothy Robinson that eventually led to my skepticism and abandonment of helmets. It eventually led my wife to give hers up as well.
