As an aside, ISTM that m5x.8 od the most common SI size I come across for general use screws. For the U.S., it seems 1/4-20 is the most common. I have no data, just my general impression - maybe because most metric stuff I use is bike related?
Bit if true, I wonder why the difference in diameter. m6x1 is much, much closer in size to 1/4-20.
