From that perspective, I would think that the Democratic People's
Republic of (North) Korea would be the happiest country.  Just ask any
DPRK resident and they would likely claim they are extremely happy
with conditions in their country.  Of course, if they answered
anything else, they would immediately be invited to visit the nearest
re-education center for an attitude re-adjustment.

I'm not so sure about that :-) I've been to a few countries with
rather severe governments and generally speaking the people are
"content". Getting up, going to work, coming home and eating supper,
etc.

Indonesia had the "Trans Migration" Program where large portions of
the population of Java were moved from the home island (some times
forcibly) to remote areas in other islands. Some 2.5 million people.

China was rather unique in that a very large group , perhaps 100,000
moved to a different part of the country some 6,000 miles away.
I've simplified the "Long March" as the underlying reasons were far
more complex.

And don't forget that people in N. Korea have nothing to compare their
living circumstances with. It's normal to them.

My wife's older sister had married a G.I. ad went to the States with
him and was living in California. Years later my wife made a visit to
her and when she got back said "It's fine to visit but I wouldn't want
to live there". :-)
