I use the News.individual.net (check link as its from memory) aka the
German server which is £10 a year and is fast and reliable which seems
worth not having to deal with the glitches etc for the free stuff.

Agreed. I've been using individual.net for the last year:
<https://news.individual.net>
<https://news.individual.net/overview.php>
It's been quite reliable with only a few short outages. The price is
right at 10 Euros/year. One feature I really like is when I post a
message to a newsgroup, and then poll the server for new messages, my
message appears almost instantly. That verifies that my message
actually arrived at the server. This is in contrast to my previous
nightmare service, where my messages might appear up to an hour later,
or sometimes disappear for no obvious reason.

For a news reader, I've been using Forte Agent since the 1990's:

Forte Agent is a fairly old news reader which has changed owners
several times over the years. Development stopped in approximately
2014. The company still accepts registration payments indicating that
they might still be alive.

There are some good alternatives that run on Linux, but nothing I
would recommend for Windows, except maybe Thunderbird, which I haven't
used for a long time.
I dowloaded and tried Thunderbird for my wife's e-mail on her Windows
machine. I quickly shitcanned it got her "Outlook." She has Outlook
now on her Ipad. I gave Thunderbird a test run for Usenet. Nope... not
a chance. I'm sticcking with Forte Agent.
