 I believe that you worked commercially doing technical things. I'm sure some of those things constituted "real problems." I doubt that any rose to the level of keeping those companies in business. IOW, I suspect that if you'd stopped showing up for work, those in charge would have said "Tom can't make it in this week. Joe, please take over where he left off."

I suspect if tommy didn't show up for a week there would be a collective sigh of relief

 The greatest detail you've given about any of your work was on programming motion control for a tabletop device to drip solutions into test tubes, or something similar. Programming motion control is technician level work, not engineering.
