I have problems looking up anything that old.  The only service that
goes that far back is Google.  However, Google's Usenet archive ended
on Feb 22, 2024.  Since then, nobody seems to be rebuilding the
indexes when they become scrambled.  Lots of things no longer work
correctly.  The other Usenet archives are still functional, but don't
retain articles that far back.
 
Using NovaBBS, I found 59 articles, by various people, with the words
"poison gas" in them.  The earliest article was on May 5, 2021 (4
years ago):

Unfortunately, I couldn't determine the earliest article posted by
Tom.  The newsreader will only display 1,000 articles by Tom, which
only go back to Nov 26, 2023.
 

Besides that, I find it exceptionally difficult to believe that people
would brag on strava that they were faster than tom. If tom can point to
a post on strava by a 20something year-old where they called out tom -
even in a passing reference - I'll stand corrected.

I find it interesting that the "severe concussion" occurred just
before Tom's DUI arrest.

I never minded fast riders disappearing up the road, I just didn't like
my rides being specifically chosen for comparison by people 40 years
younger than me. But who knows, maybe it was a compliment. I was pretty
sensitive about my riding after the poison gas incident.

 
In what month and year was this poison gas incident?
Do you have a link to this "comparison"?
Do you have the names of any of the perpetrator so I can find them on
Strava?

Strava started 2009 ish so he can’t have been having comparisons from 20
year olds in 2000!

Good point.  (I'm kicking myself for having missed it).  I was going
to assemble a chronology of events for Tom, but decided that it was
just too much work.

He only closed it in the last few years so was clearly happy with it, or at
least not concerned with it until recently.

Tom started or re-started using Strava at the same time that I began.
My oldest ride that I recorded was on July 8, 2022.

It took me a while to stop making mistakes, so I guess that I started
in June 2022.  Tom's first Strava entries would likely have been
around the same time.

At the same time, Tom claimed that he had years of historical rides
saved on Strava, which had mysteriously disappeared (or something
similar).  I can't find the posting, but at least I now know the
probable date. 

Incidentally, I was trying to learn how Strava works at the same time
that Tom was struggling with his multiple Strava problems.  I
accidentally initiated a "follow" request to Tom.  I immediately
unfollowed, but Tom noticed the request.  Within minutes, Tom was
posting on rec.bicycles.tech that I was "stalking" him.

I think this was the incident.  Tom's comments:
