Firearms can be useful, they are also frequently misused, and violence of all sorts happens with or without firearms.
The general rule is: If you have a firearm for "defense" it's because you're afraid of something or someone.
Whether or not the fear is justified is a separate matter. In general, the safer the environment actually is, the more timid the gun owner must be.
I don't see how those points can be logically denied.
