I rode down the A470 which drops from the hill pass to the valley below
over few miles, in the car feels much steeper so I had assumed be a
freewheel but wasn’t quite steep enough or rather I needed to keep topping
up the speed , to keep my speed in the 32/35 mph range, which appears to be
about the limit of my cadence now, about 100ish back in the day could hold
130ish though a different bike.

I don't think I'd ever be pedaling to "top up" a 30+ mph speed, unless I was trying for a surge before a short rise of some kind. I just tuck in and/or use the aerobar if one is present on the bike.
At those speeds, it's faster and more efficient to coast rather than pedal, no matter what your gearing.
