some spring steel from eg. a truck, and either grind direct to shape or
forge and retreat.

The problem with leaf springs is thickness, plus used ones may have cracks. You could anneal it and saw out the wedges, or just plasma cut them, but assembling a stack could be difficult. Brazing might work as long as hardening didn't melt it.
