Is there a gadget which will measure the thickness of painted steel sheet from one side?  I am thinking of buying a steel boat.

Peter,
If you're still in Trowbridge or nearby many of the local boatyards should have an ultrasonic thickness tester as IIRC it's a requirement the hull is checked every few years to make sure the hull thickness is maintained.

David,
Yes I am still in Trowbridge, unfortunately the boats I want to look at aren't.  :)
Having now looked at some, they all seem to have single digital outputs, which is disappointing - a simple graphical display of reflections vs time would be much more useful.
