  There is certainly something to be said for being able to freehand grind a specialty HSS tool, but for the most part I just put them in tool holders for my QCTP.

I suppose a lantern tool post "might" be able to hold a smaller scrap of HSS, but to really get the most out of your HSS a tangential holder might be the way to go.
