I touch the bit against the end of the work and set the micrometer carriage stop against a block or rod of or near the size of the shoulder length I want to turn. The bulk of the carriage and slide prevent using caliper jaws.
I just realized that a ball or T shaped bore gauge set with a micrometer might serve to locate the stop.
