Having to do a smog check is one of the worst things about the mainland - what
an ordeal!
They did away with car emissions testing a few years back. The usual
suspects whined that the government was abdicating its responsibility to
the environment by eliminating it and suggested all sorts of conspiracy
theories about who paid them off to to it. The motivation was quite
simple. Garages were no longer interested in offering the service. They
had invested a lot of money into the testing facilities hoping to earn
it back on repairs. It turned out not to be so lucrative because so few
cars failed. Modern emission systems are very effective and durable.
Commercial vehicles still require the testing.
I had a Mazda rotary car and a VW Rabbit on the mainland. The rotary was an
inherently dirty car, emission-wise. It had a big 4-barrel carburetor that
supplied the gas the engine needed and an external combustion chamber to provide
extra combustion time for the exhaust gases. My car had two distributors. One
of them provided the retarded spark needed to provide the extra un-burnt fuel to
the reaction chamber on start up to get it red hot. The carb also mixed engine oil
with the gas to provide lubrication for the apex seals. That car was a real gass.
I had a lot of fun with that car.
