It's idiotic to think you should deep fry a turkey in a garage. I seem to recall this from discussions about deep frying turkeys many years ago on RFC: aside from doing it outside away from buildings is the first thing they need to do is fill the fryer with water. Then dip something equal to the size and weight of the turkey into WATER in the the deep fryer, to determine the level of how much oil to add. You know, so you know it won't overflow when you use actual hot oil and lower the turkey into the fryer. It can be done, but most people probably shouldn't try it.
Someone in East Liverpool burned their entire house down this year by deep frying a turkey in their garage. It likely wasn't fully thawed. I've never deep-fried a turkey, and I don't plan on it, but one should turn the flame OFF before putting the turkey in oil (then relight). In the case it over-flows, at least it won't explode into flames. I wonder if home owner's insurance covers that kind of stupidity?
